Game Postponed...not that we would have made it anyhow

So, the Mudhens game was supposed to start at 5 p.m. There was no way we would have made it there in time, so we made a few other stops along the way. And it turns out the game was postponed due to rain (the only AAA postponement of the day!). Which made perfect sense to us since we hit 3 thunderstorms on the way to the hotel.

One of our stops was our first ever meal at White Castle. And this White Castle was awesome because it was paired with Church's Chicken. Which I am guessing is the Ohio version of a Taco Hut. We got to try fried okra. It was very tasty. Neither of us had ever even had okra before. But if you fry it, I will try it. So we at the okra which the cashier recommended to us. Burgers were pretty good. Fries had been waiting too long to be eaten, but being hungry, we ate them anyhow.

I found it amusing that the bottoms of the burger and fry boxes had interesting little tidbits. Like cheese makes hamburgers taste better but doesn't make a good coaster for a cup of coffee. And you can warm your buns with these, which can actually be purchased. Kinda frightening.

Since there is no game to tell you about from today, I will tell you about the first game we ever went to together. It was a Los Angeles Dodgers vs New York Mets game. My two favorite teams. I honestly don't remember who won. I do recall that we were there at least 2 hours before the gates even opened because I was so excited to get to the game. I had an amazing time. It is one of the best gifts Justin has ever given me (also the first given to me while we were dating). Come to think of it, most of the best gifts involve baseball or softball. Not all that surprising actually.

  2. Oh my this is so funny. We stopped at a Cracker Barrel last night on the way home from MA/NY after our trip to Howe Cavern's. Aunt Stacey tried FRIED OKRA for the first time and let me try some of hers as well. That was also my first time eating fried okra as well. Another weird fact Howe Cavern's first tours started on Memorial Day 1929 and I took Stacey their for the first time on Memorial Day 2010! Sorry to hear about the postponed game. Avoid traveling through NYC next time cut across MA Pike and take the NY Thruway especial during Holidays. We had our own fun on the PA turnpike on the way home. Someone with a truck pulling a trailer loaded with off road bikes clipped the front of a car -- there where bikes every where!!!!!Love you guys - Uncle Rich

  3. Rich that is too funny! We did go on the Thruway. We were on 90 from Mass all the way to Ohio. It was a nice drive. The problem was we didn't realize the game was at 5 and not 7 until Sunday. There was no way we were going to leave at like 3 a.m. to get here. Good thing is it was canceled, so had we left that early, I would have been angry to not see a game. It all worked out in the end. And we got fried okra.

  5. Since you missed the game I thought I would send you a run down of another Lehigh Valley IronPigs vs Toledo Mud Hens....

I love the NAME IronPigs - They are a Phillies Minor League team and I have been meaning to catch more games. I haven't been yet but here you go.

TOLDEO, Ohio -- Perhaps the IronPigs should consider playing all their games in the morning.

Neil Sellers' first Triple-A home run highlighted a nine-run outburst for Lehigh Valley over the first two innings, and four relievers combined for 61/3 scoreless innings in an 11-6 win over Toledo Wednesday afternoon that snapped a season-long six-game losing streak.

The game began at 11:15 a.m. after a 40-minute rain delay, and the win was the third this year for the IronPigs (19-33) in so-called Education Day games (they had won both such games at Coca-Cola Park). It is also their fifth straight victory over two years in games that began before noon.

Before the game, the Phillies announced that outfielder Dewayne Wise has exercised a June 1 out clause in his contract and has become a free agent.

The IronPigs banged out 16 hits, 10 of them in the first two innings, as they chased Alfredo Figaro (4-2) after just 12/3 innings. All 10 hits came with two outs to produce all of the early runs.

The IronPigs' three hottest hitters -- Sellers, Andy Tracy and Melvin Dorta -- continued their surges.

Sellers, who hit a combined 36 homers the last two years at Double-A Reading, followed three straight singles, including a run-scoring hit by Cody Ransom, with a three-run homer. The red-hot Sellers later added a ninth-inning single, giving him seven multi-hit games in his last 10 starts, and he's now 17-for-37 (.459) over his last 11 games and 21 of 60 (.350) in his last 16.

Tracy went 3-for-5 and is now 9-for-17 in six games since returning from a shoulder strain and is hitting .339 over his last 16 games, raising his average from .198 to .251.

Dorta had two hits and knocked in two runs and is now 10-for-27 (.370) in his last 11 games.

John Mayberry Jr. added three hits, including a two-run home run in the sixth to provide some big insurance runs.

Toledo (30-23), which had an eight-game home-winning streak snapped, answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning against Brandon Duckworth, but the IronPigs bounced back with four more runs in the second, again all with two outs. Mayberry, Tracy, and Ransom all had RBI singles before Dorta capped the inning with a two-run single.

The Mud Hens chased Duckworth with a three-run third that cut the deficit to 9-6, but Ryan Vogelsong came in to get the final out of the inning, then combined with Alex Concepcion, Oscar Villarreal and Mike Zagurski to blank Toledo the rest of the way on six hits.

Vogelsong (2-2) picked up the win by allowing two hits and striking out four in 21/3 innings.

Toledo did load the bases with nobody out in the eighth against Villarreal, but the veteran right-hander used a strikeout and a double-play grounder to escape unscathed.
